Sir Ken states, "Creativity is as important as literacy in education, and we should treat it with the same status." Do you agree, disagree or fall somewhere in between? Explain.

I agree with the statement by Sir Ken. I really do believe that creativity is equally as important as literacy when it comes to educating a chid. If a child is not encouraged to be creative then they will have a problem when it comes to thinking for one's self and making decisions. I also believe that social skills are just as important as book skills. If a child can't communicate their ideas and introduce themselves to a new person then they will not be successful in life. I grew up being encouraged to be creative and sociable. However I do not think that creativity can be taught. Creativity is individual. Educator's and parents can cultivate and encourage creativity but they can not teach a child how to be creative. As a teacher I hope to encorage my students to develop creativity and social skills as well as teach them to be literate.

Interesting take on creativity. I think I might have to agree with you...

Sir Ken may be calling on us teachers to NOT quash student creativity, but that's a little hard given the testing-based culture in schools, is it not?

That was perfect when you said that these kids will not be able to think for themselves in the future, and even worse, may not be able to think critically. With the many challenges our country faces here, we need a new generation of capable and intelligent children!

Tori you hit on some interesting points. You had some great points or creativity and what its all about. I belive that as time goes on students become more and more creativite and school systems and standardized tests are slowly taking that away from them.

I think creativity is fluid, and even those who deemed "not very creative" by the others around them can still have sparks that may light the world on fire. I think teaching creativity is a really difficult thing, and that it is easier to inspire someone to cultivate creativity.

Creativity cannot be "taught" but it can be developed. If a child is never given the chance to be creative, how will they learn how to be creative? Most people have some creative ability; some people are extremely creative and it is a gift.
We need creativity to survive!!
