Blog Post #2

I do not know that I agree with the statement “creativity is as important as literacy in education,” although I do think that creativity is important. I think it is important to have literacy skills, without them how would we be able to hold down jobs and perform. Schools focus so much on literacy, but I believe that they do this because they know how important it is. We should be creative, because being creative gives us new and inventive ways to explore and learn new things. Being creative helps turn something boring, into something amazing and fun. We often strive off of creativity when trying to capture students and make them eager to learn. Although I do not feel like the two even compare, I feel that they are both important traits to have in life. In our life we use both literacy and creativity so much that the two have become essential. I still feel that in order to achieve in life we must value literacy more than we value creativity.

I think it could be argued that without creativity one would not have literacy.

I think it is very difficult for us to claim creativity is as important as literacy, math, or science, because all our lives the art of creativity has been downplayed. We've always been taught that academics are more important. What do you think?

I completely agree. I also said in my blog post that I don't think the two are the same. I don't think most people today cannot get by without being literate, where students can get by without being creative, as bad as that is to say. Although I do firmly believe that the more creative a student is, the better because it will help them stand out and probably be more successful in life.

Excellent insight from the classroom to real life. Yes, creativity can help motivate and interest students in the classroom.

I consider creativity just as important, if not more important, as literacy. With creativity, even if you can not express yourself through literacy, one can always portray information, requests, and ideas through creativity. Don't get me wrong, literacy is crucial to our society as well, but I believe creativity brings a certain aspect to learning that literacy never can.

Good! I agree! I am also torn on wher creativity and literacy fit in together. I think social skills are important too and I'm not sure where that fits in either. I think a mixture of all three is important to be a good educator and a good student. I think if as teachers we give equal importance to all three of those things then we will be more likely to reach each of our students and have well rounded students.
